General Outline of „Space, Place and Educational Settings“

Learning and educational attainment are affected by and the result of the complex interplay of a wide range of relevant factors. While some of these factors are mainly related to the cognition skills and experiences of the learning individual, others do rather concern the quality of the classroom environment and the ability of the teachers, for example, or they are primarily related to the out-of-school environment, such as the access to education and the socio-economic and educational background of the parents and the neighborhood.

The main aim of the symposium is to bring together international scholars from various disciplines, different schools of thought and cultures to foster academic exchange and debates on the role of socio-environmental settings for learning and educational attainment. The symposium addresses current research questions that include, but are not limited to the following points:

  1. How can we measure or evaluate the quality of learning and educational attainment?
  2. In which ways can particular social and environmental settings improve or restrict the opportunities for learning and educational attainment?
  3. To which extent do learning and educational attainment shape and produce or reproduce socio-environmental settings?
  4. What do we know about the role of socio-environmental settings at different geographical scales (i.e. national, regional and local scales) and also at micro-geographical scales, such as the interior design of a classroom or library, for example?
  5. What are innovative approaches for the optimization of socio-environmental settings with regard to learning and educational attainment?
